“When women take care of their health, they become their own best friend.”  Maya Angelou

Victoria Thomas, Functional Health & Hope Coach

Welcome to Second Journey Healing, a wellness coaching/consultant practice based on the needs of thousands of women who are no longer willing to settle for symptoms and misery the rest of their life. Maybe like me, you’ve tried the route of allopathic medicine but nothing much has changed.

When you can’t go back the way you came.

It took the unraveling of my own health, marriage, hopes, and dreams before taking seriously the reality of stress-induced metabolic dysregulation. Although my health seemed to decline gradually after two surgeries, the emotional stress of losing two parents, several close friends, and my youngest brother to cancer , completely tipped me over the edge. By the time my brother died, I was deep in adrenal insufficiency with cardiac arrhythmias, panic attacks, insomnia, and agoraphobia – yet still dealing with other unrelated personal stressors. Not knowing how depleted I’d become, I became housebound – and even bedridden – for a long while. No amount of rest refreshed me. Regular testing didn’t reveal much, and medications made me worse. I was losing my hair, my patience, not to mention my trust in allopathic medicine. Talk about a hot mess:

  • Adrenal insufficiency/burnout
  • HPA dysregulation
  • Insomnia
  • Hypothyroidism
  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Atrial fibrillation/ tachycardia / bradycardia / PVCs
  • Chronic Fatigue Syndrome / Fibromyalgia
  • Labile hypertension / BP spikes
  • Suicidal ideation
  • PTSD
  • Acne / scaly skin
  • Hair loss
  • Osteopenia
  • Hormone imbalance
  • Plantar fasciitis / Morton’s neuroma
  • Joint pain
  • Muscle pain
  • Tinnitus /ringing in the ears
  • Glaucoma
  • Depersonalization
  • OCD
  • Fear / Panic / Agoraphobia
  • Iatrogenic illness due to wrongly prescribed benzodiazepines
  • Histamine Intolerance

  • Hysterectomy
  • Total thyroidectomy

  • Cardiac stress tests
  • 30-day Holter monitor
  • Echocardiogram
  • Brain MRI
  • Renal ultrasound
  • Bone density scans
  • Electromyography
  • Sleep studies
  • Pulmonary tests
  • Thyroid needle biopsies
  • Blood tests
  • Diurnal 4x cortisol saliva tests
  • 24 hour urine tests
  • Tests to rule out pheochromocytoma (adrenal tumor)
  • Tests to rule out Cushings disease.

I can’t even remember all the tests. My family called me hypochondriac because I kept going to doctors. I get it. What they didn’t understand was how much I was suffering – and that all these doctors are only trained to “see” so much.

My third trip to the cardiac unit did me in. I returned home unable to sleep, having panic attacks, frightened I’d never get well. I was under enormous emotional, physical, and psychological stress. Yet the journey back to health – in fact, the journey back to me – wouldn’t happen until I took charge of my own health. I had to start thinking outside the conventional box. Which was hard to do at first, but…

When the student is ready, the teacher will appear.”

That’s when a thoughtful health coach, his partner (chiropractor), and a women’s advocate showed up in my life. I think of them now as my ‘triage’ support team.

I was counseled, comforted, and guided back to health in some very practical ways, which included an HTMA, or hair tissue mineral analysis and blood testing. The hair test confirmed spot-on that I was a complete mineral desert: critically low across the board in magnesium, potassium, sodium, and calcium while normal serum tests had shown mostly “normal range.”

My symptoms and emotional state made sense in light HTMA results. A full iron panel pointed to excess unbound iron after years post-hysterectomy, and my adrenals had flatlined. Actually, my whole HPA axis was dysregulated due to years of unresolved stress, personal trauma, and taking all the wrong supplements.

I began to address core emotional issues and nutritional deficiencies, while following a whole foods protocol as if my life depended on it. Amazingly, my body responded well. My flagging adrenals woke up, energy returned, my heart calmed down, and hope began to rise again. At that point, I felt undergirded enough to better cope with the stress of an impending divorce, court, and prepping my home to sell – but only because I’d worked hard with my health coach to heal multiple deficiencies and imbalances, which clearly affected my mental outlook in a positive way. It saved my life.

I want you to know that healing physically often becomes a time of inner transformation. This has been my personal experience, as well as many others. I had to start honoring my own healing by finally pulling away from toxic relationships and naysayers, implementing radical self-care, and eating like my health depended on it if I was going to rebuild my future as a single-again woman.

Eventually I felt so dang good, I went back to school! With the bulk of the chaos behind me, I realized my passions again – the love and joy of the healing arts. After all, I began this journey years ago as a hospital nurse but always with a keen interest in natural health.

It’s my joy and calling to do what I love – helping stressed-out women experience new levels of health so they can rebuild their lives … just as I’m doing now.

To that end, I now practice as a holistic health coach, mineral consultant, and advocate for women. Some have called me a Functional Health & Hope Coach:

  • Certified Root Cause Protocol Consultant, Mineral Metabolism, Copernican Institute.
  • Certified Holistic Health & Wellness CoachInternational Association of Wellness Professionals
  • Studies in Naturopathy & Nutrition, Trinity School of Natural Health
  • Licensed Practical Nurse, Athens Vocational College
  • Certification in Crisis Intervention, Stephen Ministry, Mt. Paran
  • Trauma Healing – ongoing studies.

My most valuable experience has been my own health journey because I came so close to giving up. Instead, it’s given me a deep compassion for women-in-transition. Coupled with my studies in Mineral Metabolism with Morley Robbins, founder of Copernican Institute, I feel my toolbox holds valuable keys to women’s health and healing.

At Copernican, I studied Morley Robbin’s advanced curriculum in Mineral Metabolism, Iron/Copper dysregulation, plus Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis. The HTMA, along with specific blood markers, are by far the most valuable tests for my clients, providing a clearer understanding of the impact of oxidative stress on all our bodies, but with a simple means to get us back on track.

Thank you for visiting Second Journey Healing. Reach out if you have a question. I’d love to hear from you. I’d love to hear your story.
